Radically Open DBT (RO DBT)
Is it possible to have too much self-control?
RO DBT is therapy for people who identify as "over-controlled;" those who are highly perfectionistic, feel they cannot relax, are rigid, and have difficulty expressing their emotions. Often, they are high performers at school and work.
They tend to see new or unfamiliar situations as dangerous, and are more likely to avoid them. In social relationships, they may struggle to form new relationships and with intimacy in deeper friendships. They may be more distrustful of others and have learned to mask their inner feelings, leading them to feelings of disconnection, loneliness and be viewed by others as distant.
What does RO DBT teach?
Increase flexibility
Reduce perfectionism
Express emotions authentically
Learn social signalling skills
Build and enhance relationships
RO DBT focuses on social signaling, openness, and flexibility.
Some common diagnoses that can be treated with RO-DBT are:
eating disorders such as anorexia nervosa
treatment-resistant depression
obsessive-compulsive personality disorder
The goals of RO DBT are to help people live with more freedom and authenticity so that they can find their "tribe" and feel safe to be themselves.
